It’s not that unregenerate sinners (sinners in their natural state) have no understanding or knowledge of God. They have tons of understanding and knowledge of God. They hate that knowledge.
Satan has all kinds of understanding and knowledge about God as well. He hates that knowledge and understnading. Because he hates God.
The plain facts of the Bible and of experience is that unregenerate sinners apart from the work of the Spirit, either hate, or are completely indifferent to everything they know about the one true God.
So it’s better to look at it as unregenerate sinners have no understanding or knowledge of God in a saving way. Knowledge and understanding do not equal salvation. Knowledge and understanding, plus love of who Christ really is equals salvation.
Unless God draws a person by the power of the Spirit and changes a person disposition no one will come to God. The reason sinners do not choose Christ apart from the Spirit working in them is not that they can’t choose Christ, it’s because they don’t want to.
People’s inability to come to Christ on their own is a moral inability. What do sinners do apart from the work of the Spirit? They see there is a God. They know there is a God. And they suppress the truth. The try to squash it down. They try to get rid of it. They do and think really sinful things. (Romans 1:18-32) Sometimes even really good things, tainted with sin (Romans 3:10-17) not for God’s glory, but for self-glory. (Romans 14:23)
They lie to themselves. They try to make things up. They try to coddle themselves and makes themselves feel better, so that their sin is ok. So that they can sit on the throne of their life and are accountable to no one. In, essence become their own gods, or make up or mold their own gods to suit their own needs.
Friends. Unregenerate, spiritually dead, sinful hearts are the reason people believe all kinds of stupid things. It’s a heart issue. It always is. Due to the hardness of their hearts, unregenerate people are willing to believe and do all kinds of illogical things.
“They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.” (Ephesians 4:18)
Ignorance is not the issue. Hardness of heart is the issue. Hardness of heart causes ignorance. The issue is deeper than our will, or our intellect. It always is. Even if you could prove that the God of the Bible exists, which you can, no one will believe in him, unless first that person is changed at the deepest level of their being. Oh, how we need the Holy Spirit to move.
The biggest problem any man or woman born into this world has is that they are sinners who don’t want to submit to the sovereign God of the universe.
The biggest gift that God has given anyone is himself. Not only in the person and work of his son Jesus, but also in the person and work of the Holy Spirit. If you have any thought or inclinations towards God, don’t take this for granted. Not everyone is walking around thinking about God. But much more than that, you need Christ. Do you see that need?
That is huge if you do. Do you know you are a sinner and that if you were to die in your sins and stand before God, you would be ruined, cast away into damnation forever.
Oh, I beg of you, trust in Christ. Do you see him standing before you as the savior of the world. This is a great gift. No small thing, if you have eyes to see. Trust in him.
“these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. For who knows a person's thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. (1 Corinthians 2:10-12, 14)
“The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit.” (John 3:8)
Do you see him? Do you see Christ? Only just believe. Cast your soul upon him. ““For God so loved the world,[i] that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
