Is it possible to know God’s “perfect” will for your life?

The first step to truly knowing God is to know His word. Without the Bible, we would have a very limited knowledge of Him. Psalm 19 and Romans 1 teach us that we would know that there is a Creator but no specific knowledge of what He is like, what pleases Him, how to enter into a relationship with Him through His son Jesus Christ and many other precious truths.

"Some people will travel around the world to find Gods will for their life but will not go to the next room to read their Bible. The desire to do what God has already revealed is crucial for receiving specific knowledge for your life. It is impossible to know Gods specific will unless we are willing to bring our lives into conformity with His general will." (D. Sills) Some people want to know God’s will for who they are supposed to marry, or where they are supposed to work, or where they are supposed to live or what they are supposed to wear and on and on the list goes. If you truly want to know God's will for your life. The first step is to know God. And to do that we must know God’s word. Scripture is sufficient to know all there is to know about God. He has revealed everything we need to know about Himself, and everything we need to know to live in a right relationship with Him. Anything he doesn’t tell us, well we are not obligated to and we actually do not need to know. God has given us everything we need for life and godliness in the scriptures (2 Peter 1:3). “The Lord our God has secrets known to no one. We are not accountable for them, but we and our children are accountable forever for all that he has revealed to us, so that we may obey all the terms of these instructions.” (Deuteronomy 29:29 NLT) I listened to a sermon the other day by John Macarthur. It was called, “Taking the Mystery Out of Knowing God's Will” And he basically gave five points and summarized it like this: God’s will is that you be saved, spirit-filled, sanctified, submissive, suffering, and saying thanks all the time. That's God's will.

You say, "Ah, come on. You're cheating me. I thought I was gonna get an answer about the girl I'm supposed to marry." Oh, I'm gonna give you that. I'm gonna tell you exactly what to do. You say, "I want a specific answer." Well that's good. There's one final principle and you're gonna like it. You're gonna like it.

If you're saved, spirit-filled, sanctified, submissive, suffering and thankful - you ready for this? Do whatever you want. Do whatever you want. Marry whoever you want. Go wherever you want. Work wherever you want. Choose whatever you want. You say, "Whoa. Are you sure?" Absolutely. Because if this is true of your life, guess who's controlling your wants. What do you think you will want to do. Because if you are following His revealed will for your life. The things you know, you will want to marry the right person, and you will want to be the right person to marry. If you are following Gods revealed will for your life, you will want to work at a place that is honoring to God, and you will be the type of worker who is honoring to God. And on and on the list goes. Be so concerned about the things that God has revealed to you, that you literally can do whatever you want. Because your wants will be His wants. And that really is a big secret to the Christian life.

You find God's will by getting as close to Jesus as you can and staying there. As you walk with Him daily, staying in step with the Holy Spirit, you can hear Him saying "this is the way; walk in it."

God will fill your heart with desires to do what He wills for your life. His perfect will does exist, but you find it by following the desires of your heart when it delights in God. (Psalm 37:4)
