How do we know the Bible is True?

Somebody asked me the other day. How do you the know the Bible is true? Someone was bothering them. Telling them the Bible was not true. And they had all this historical evidence of it being tampered with. So they felt out of their league because they didn't know any of this stuff. All they ever had was a child like faith.

So I sent them a few apologetic resources as well as this note. I hope it helps. “I think where you are at is the perfect place to defend that the Bible is the word of God. And I urge you to not move past where you are, but rather firmly plant your feet. You could earn more historical stuff if you wanted. It would not hurt. But I would say it is not needed, and it definitely should not be relied upon. The most important thing we have is what you already trust in, and that is the Bible. It is the word of God empowered by prayer and the Holy Spirit that is powerful. It is the most powerful means by which God causes people to become Christians. Sometimes I think Satan tries to trick us into thinking we need to abandon our most powerful weapon - because for some reason we're supposed to be ashamed of it But Much like a lion, Gods word does not need to be defended, even its authenticity, it just needs to be unleashed. The Bible itself is its most powerful witness unto itself. The biggest thing to remember when we are defending our faith, or witnessing is to never really let it turn into an argument of evidence, because then we have just sunk to the unbelievers level. Most people are not going to be argued into submitting their lives to the true and living God from the hordes of scientific and archaeological evidence. As much evidence as there is and as good as those arguments are. The unbeliever already knows there a God, thats not the problem. “who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them.” (Romans 1:18b-19)

“For although they knew God, they did not honor him as God or give thanks to him, but they became futile in their thinking, and their foolish hearts were darkened.” (Romans 1:22) It’s why they need to repent. Because they know there is a God and they are not honoring him. There really is no such thing as an atheist. Professed atheist are no different then any other rebellious sinful person who admits there is a God. It’s not that they don't know there is a God. Knowing there is a God is absolutely easy to understand, and impossible to deny. What the wicked sinful heart finds hard, or impossible (in his own strength) to do, is submit his/her life to him. So they suppress the truth, to ease their own conscious, and make themselves feel good about, or at least not have to think about their rebellion. They are suppressing the truth and they need to repent. And the word of God mixed with the Holy Spirit is the only power, powerful enough to cause them to do that At the lowest of the low, at the bottom of all the reasons we can know that the Bible is God’s word is that the Bible is self authenticating to those who believe. For those who have come to faith in Christ, that is have been drawn to Him by the Holy Spirt, been given the Holy Spirit and have been sealed by the Holy Spirit (Eph. 1:13), His Spirit not only bears witness with our spirit (Rom. 8) but it causes us to recognize His words (the Bible) as His very words. The Bible says in John 10 that His sheep hear His voice and they follow Him. So we hear His voice, and we know that they are His words and we follow Him. Where the words of God are, God is, and where God is, are His very words. John 5:13 says, “that these things were written so that we may know that believing in Jesus that we have eternal life”.

The Bible also says in Romans 10, I believe vs. 17 that “faith comes from hearing and hearing from the words of Christ”.

We can believe the Bible is God’s word because the Bible tells us it is His word. It takes faith, it takes the Holy Spirit to open our ears, our mind and our hearts to understand this but once the Holy Spirit gives this understanding, it is self authenticating. Now to the truth surprising deniers of God (natural man) but that’s ok. It makes sense why it doesn't make sense to them. Again, it’s not that it doesn't make sense. They just don't want it to make sense. Knowing there is a God and that the Bible is true is not hard to understand. It’s just hard to swallow. Because it means you have to change. And natural man doesn't want to change. Natural man, loves darkness more than they love the light. Ephesians 4: 18 says, “They are darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of heart.”

If you notice – it says that it is not that ignorance causes a hard heart, it is hard hearts that causes ignorance. Sin causes people to not see reality in an incorrect way. There is a blindness in an unbelievers life. Now this sounds foolish to truth surprising deniers of God (natural man). If you were to tell an unbeliever that you believe in God because you know there is a God, creation proves it, and you believe and trust the Bible because God says it is his word, and God has revealed this to you by his Spirit, they would maybe say you are cuckoo and talking in circles. But that’s ok. Don’t drop your weapons. Be strong and courageous. Stand firm. But, as it is written, “What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”— these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God.” “Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual” (1 Corinthians 2:9-10, 12-13) A person’s only hope really is, to be born again, and changed by the Holy Spirit. So share the word, pray the word, breathe the word, it’s the best way to defend your faith and witness at the same time. And soak it al in prayer. God do whatever it takes! Get a hold of this person. Pray that the Holy Spirit would work on them. That God would open the eyes of their heart, a nd give them eyes to see, and ears to hear. That the miracle work of amazing grace would take place, and they that were one lost and blind, may see and be found. Have you ever prayed this way? God still does miracles today. He is the same yesterday, today and forever. God has never set out to save those who are seeking him and are longing after righteousness. No. He has always been seeking to save those who are wandering from him, trying to hide from him, and are rebellious towards him. Because this was all of us at one time or another. “While we were yet sinners, Christ loved us” (Romans 5:8) We love him because he first loved us (1 John 4:19) God is the seeker. Trust him. Trust his ways. This is the right and best way to defend your faith and witness to the world at the same time. Child like faith does not mean childish faith. It just means we are his child, he is our Father, and we trust him. It is also not to say, that is not to say there is not any other evidence that the Bible is the word of God. There is. But who, and what we are, is first and foremost Bible people. Without illumination by the Spirit of God, even concrete proof would not help. We look at the miracles that Jesus did in His day, the raising of Lazarus from the dead, the rising from the grave himself. This did not even cause all the believe during that time. In fact, only some believed even with the most miraculous

So there is a higher reasoning than sure proof because even if God were to show up and say, “hey these are my words”, which by the way, he did. Jesus numerous times said everything written in Scripture testified of Him. People still wouldn’t believe. So something more is needed. That is God wrought faith. And faith takes things to a whole new level.

There are other evidences as well though. And these are faith building for believers. Not the grounds for our belief. But nevertheless they are faith building, no matter what. Think about it, 66 books with many different authors over thousands of years, all telling the same story but then this is exactly how He preserved it as well. Different people, with different personalities, over thousands of years, copying and translating. Couple that with archaeologist, and textual critics, and all the different modes of copying throughout the years, the invention of the printing press and all the people that died so that others could have his word. All these things are by far beyond miraculous. They not only show a God who is all powerful. But it shows a God who wants to know us, who intimately relates to us. He is not some far off God who create the world and let it spin off into whatever direction but is intimately related in a very personal way and this can even be seen in all the ways his hand can be seen working through all of history, keeping and preserving his word so all of his people can have it.

God wants his people to have his word and they will, and God wants His church, his people to be the vehicle by which it is not only preserved but also how it is brought to and taught to the world . This should not only be stunning to us, that God would use us, fallible, imperfect people to do such with His perfect infallible word but it also should be assuring to us. He is God. He is sovereign. And He will surely do it. “The grass withers, and the flower fades away but His word will endure forever.” (Isaiah 40:8) “Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts. “For as the rain and the snow come down from heaven and do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth; it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.” (Isaiah 55:6-11)
