What things might you need to count as loss for the sake of knowing Christ?

Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. (Philippians 3:8a)

I might need to count as loss for the sake of knowing Christ my identity as an American. I mean I do not want to give up my American citizenship, it's a great country but what I do need to do is think of myself as a Christian first and American second.

What I mean by that is we are often made to think that individualism and our rights are the most important things. Some times I think we have a tendency to look at all the things going on in America and it brings us great fear but for totally the wrong reason. I believe often the only reason we fear is because it is going to hurt what we have become personally comfortable and accustomed to.

I am not saying it is wrong to stand against tyranny because it is right and good to stand against tyranny and oppression. Christians are called to stand. But there is a way and reason to fight that is about love for others that brings glory to God and there is a way that is only focused on self.

If the only reason the things going on in America bother us, is because it causes great fear and consternation that we might lose our personal comforts, there is a problem because Jesus has already called us to forsake all and follow Him anyway.

Nowhere in the Bible are we ever told to seek after wealth for our own use or to expect safety. Jesus has called us to forsake all for Him and He hasn’t hidden the fact that it will not be easy and possibly even dangerous.

It often seems like the American ideal is comfort, wealth and safety, while the call of Jesus on our lives as disciples is completely opposite of that.

So yeah. It is a struggle. Jesus first. Then American. Or maybe it should be my identity of who I am in Christ is the only thing that matters. Maybe I should not be latched down to this world. Just pilgrim. A traveler passing through. Hopefully helping others along in their journey to that great place, whose maker and builder is God. Makes me think of a song called "This world is not my Home" and it sounds about right. How about you? What do you need to count as loss?

This world is not my home.

I'm just a-passing through.

My treasures are laid up.

Somewhere beyond the blue.

The angels beckon me.

From heaven's open door.

And I can't feel at home

In this world anymore.

Oh Lord, you know

I have no friend like you

If heaven's not my home

Then Lord what will I do.

The angels beckon me

From heaven's open door

And I can't feel at home

In this world anymore.
